people today are so mundane
Our artists are independent. They wish to remain independent.
In the past, an artist hoped to get a recording contract with a big advance and all the support that a label could give them. Then they discovered that the record company held all the cards. Out of their record sales, the artist was paying the record company back for everything - studio time, mastering, production, distribution, advertising, management - the lot. And they still owed the record company the advance. If they failed to sell enough records, the record company would refuse to release any more songs... and the advance money became a debt to be repaid.
Shackles and chains.
Even the successful artists who became superstars wanted out of the record company contracts they had, seeking to establish their own independent label. In many cases it took some serious money and time in court to achieve their dreams.
Our artists won't be doing that. They will all start off independent and remain independent.

Are free downloads ruining the industry?
Speaking with a member of the audience at a recent gig - a New Breed of Monkey headlining The Ritz in Manchester - she remarked that having searched Limewire she had been unable to find anything by the band. In fact, she found that iTunes was the ONLY place she could find to download their songs. There was some admiration in her voice, clearly this was totally unexpacted. When I explained that this was because I had stopped free downloads on Limewire, she was amazed. Clearly she didn't know that this could be done. Well, it can. And its easy to do and doesnt cost anything. Why don't the major labels do this? I think they don't want to.
