Since 1841 there has been a Census held in England which records vital information about the population. The records vary over the years, but vital information is shown on the Census forms, as follows:

Census 1841
Place, Houses (uninhabited or building / inhabited), Names (each person sleeping there the previous night), Age & Sex, Profession (trade / employment / independant means), Where Born (same country / Scotland Ireland or foreign)

Census 1851
Parish, District, Borough, Town, Village, House number and street, Names (each person sleeping there the previous night), Relation (to head of family),Condition, Age & Sex, Rank profession occupation, Where born, Whether blind deaf or dumb.
 
Census 1861
Parish, Borough, Municipal ward, Parliamentary borough, Town, Hamlet, District, House number and street, Houses (uninhabited or building / inhabited), Names (each person sleeping there the previous night), Relation (to head of family),Condition, Age & Sex, Rank profession occupation, Where born, Whether blind deaf or dumb.
